The Story of Cloudy Day Cloudy Doves
A Dancer’s Dream
It had been cloudy for several days. The grey silk chiffon I was working with just wouldn’t help me create something wonderful. What can be inspiring about grey… I made the decision to go out for lunch. Maybe the mental mist surrounding this fabric would lift.
The cobbled street was full of pigeons. It was always full of pigeons. Most of them were a dark grey with a few white feathers. They were all pursuing or being pursued by their admirers — how very like the Tango scene. One bird stood out from the others. She was being pursued too, but she was almost white — a light cloudy grey with a blush of mauve. She had chosen a magnolia tree for her arena. Her suitors fluttered clumsily along the branches. She flew off, leaving them to seek more ordinary company.
I turned the corner into Bolivar Street. There on the road was the pale pigeon. Dead.
How beautiful she looked. She was still warm. Not a feather had been displaced. I picked her up and wondered at her beauty, at her odd colouring. The owner of a small flower stall said he had seen her fly into the path of a car. She was… and now wasn’t. In a second she had altered history.
I went into the stall and squeezed along between the buckets of flowers, still holding her. There were many herbs, many assorted bunches, some roses — and one solitary tree with one solitary flower. A white magnolia.
I paid for it and quickened my step home.
I dug a hole large enough for the magnolia and placed her there before planting the tree.
When I returned to my fabric, it had magnolias amongst the clouds of grey, and a slight mauve hue.
Without further procrastination, the garment proceeded.
I was pleased with the result.
The woman who fell in love with it wore it to a milonga. She sat down and immediately received the cabeceo from a man she had always wanted to dance with.
“What a splendid dress,” he said. “It reminds me of a pigeon that used to come to my street… I haven’t seen her for some time.”
He held her close — like there was no tomorrow. She danced light as a feather. They glided.
“Will you come again tomorrow?” he asked.
